We offer the following pregnancy scans to patients from Dulwich, Bromley, Wandsworth, Clapham, Blackheath area and beyond;

Gynaecology Scans

  • Pelvic Transvaginal Ultrasound

A typical pelvic ultrasound scan is designed to look at your reproductive organs and examine your uterus, womb lining, ovaries and cervix. During this scan, we are able to look for any abnormal appearances that may account for any specific symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

  • Follicular Tracking Scan

A follicular tracking scan is performed to measure the size of any active follicles - the fluid filled sacs in the ovaries that can contain eggs – to estimate when ovulation is likely to occur and can increase your chances of conception, both naturally and with the help of ovulation induction treatment.

  •  Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a type of imaging test. It is used to look at organs in the abdomen, including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. The blood vessels that lead to some of these organs, such as the inferior vena cava and aorta, can also be examined with ultrasound.

We will email you the results of your ultrasound report on the same day of your appointment and you are expected to discuss your results with your referral consultant/ GP.

 Pregnancy Ultrasound

  • Viability Scan and  Early Pregnancy Scan

This is an ultrasound examination that is usually carried out vaginally at 6-10 weeks of pregnancy. The aims of this scan are to determine the number of embryos present and whether the pregnancy is progressing normally inside the uterus. This type of scan is particularly useful to women who are experiencing pain or bleeding during the pregnancy and to those who have had previous failed pregnancies or ectopic pregnancies.

  • Nuchal Translucency Scan including Harmony Test (NIPT Test)

A Nuchal Translucency Scan  is carried out from 11 - 13 weeks and six days. The scan is usually performed transabdominally. The aims of this particular scan are to date the pregnancy accurately, to diagnose multiple pregnancies, to diagnose major fetal abnormalities, to diagnose early miscarriage and to assess the risks of Down's Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities.

  • Anomaly Scan

This is a detailed scan at 20-24 weeks of pregnancy. During the scan, we will examine each part of the fetal body, determine the position of the placenta, assess the amount of amniotic fluid and measure overall fetal growth. Special attention is paid to the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys and limbs. If any abnormalities are detected, the significance of the findings will be discussed by a fetal medicine consultant.

  • Cervical Scan (to assess the risk of premature birth)

This is a transvaginal scan to measure the length of the cervix. It is recommended in women at high risk for preterm birth, including multiple pregnancies, those with a previous preterm birth and abnormalities of the uterus or previous cervical surgery. This examination is usually carried out at the time of the anomaly scan but in women with previous preterm birth, it may be necessary to perform a series of scans starting from 16 weeks.

  • Wellbeing Scan Including Dopplers / Fetal Growth Scan including Dopplers

This ultrasound scan is usually carried out at about 28 weeks of pregnancy. This scan aims to determine the growth and health of the fetus. Some obstetricians advise that this scan is offered to all women. Others reserve such scans for those who have had previous complications of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia, growth restriction, diabetes or stillbirth. This scan is also advised for women who develop a problem during the course of their current pregnancy.

  • 3D 4D Scan

A 3D/4D ultrasound scan can be performed in order to see a preview of the baby from 26 to 32 weeks of pregnancy. A 4D scan is a 3D scan with the added dimension of time – as in a film or video – so the baby can be seen to be moving. 4D scans are not usually needed for medical reasons. Parents may want the scan if they are curious to see their baby's face. If you request a 4D scan, we will always conduct a wellbeing scan first, before trying to view the face or other parts of the body in 4D.

Invasive Procedures

  • Chorion Villus Sampling - CVS (11 to 15 weeks)

Chorion Villus Sampling (CVS) involves the examination of chorionic villi (placental tissue). Both the baby and placenta (afterbirth) originate from the same cell and so the chromosomes present in the cells of the placenta are the same as those of the baby.

  • Amniocentesis (16 to 34 weeks)

Amniocentesis involves the examination of cells in the fluid from around the fetus (amniotic fluid). The cells in the amniotic fluid originate from the baby and so the chromosomes present in these cells are the same as those of the baby.
